Participants will learn how to incorporate reflective practice into their therapeutic practice, practice clinical skills, learn about common ethical considerations and how to manage transference and countertransference. We will also explore different forms of supervision and how to get the most out of supervision, as well as how to recognise and combat common challenges that arise in therapy

Introduction to Cognitive Behaviour Therapy skills

Introduction to Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), basic principles and techniques. Participants will learn about the basic principles of CBT and have the opportunity to practice skills such as collaborative case formulation in CBT, as well as other CBT oriented therapeutic techniques.

Participants will have the opportunity to present a case based on one of the three topics covered in the previous weeks, and receive feedback from the facilitator and their peers.

Counselling skills
BLOCK 2:
REGISTRATIONS OPEN NOW
Introduction to basic counselling and therapeutic skills. Participants will learn about and have the opportunity to practice basic therapeutic skills. They will learn techniques such as rapport building, active listening and socratic questioning. Participants will also learn how to differentiate between vulnerabilities and protective modes in a client. We will also cover the stages, levels and methods of change and how to determine what stage of change a client is at.

Outcome measures in therapy

BLOCK 1:
This session will focus on ways in which progress can be measured in therapy, including use of common outcome measures and understanding of clinically significant change. Supervisees will also be introduced to feedback informed treatment. Supervisees will have opportunity to practice use of outcome measures during this session.

Mental State Examination and suicide risk assessment

BLOCK 1:
Any time a psychologist sees a client they should be making an assessment of their client’s mental state and risk related concerns. However, psychologists can often become anxious in introducing questions around suicide risk during sessions with clients. The first half of this session will focus specifically on how to conduct an MSE during session and implications for this in regard to client care. Supervisees will have opportunity to practice skills in conducting an MSE during session. The second half of this session will focus on suicide risk assessment, including common fears when assessing for risk, areas to consider, and ways to introduce questions regarding suicide risk in sessions with clients.

Collaborative case formulation

BLOCK 1:
Case formulation is a core skill for psychologists that allows translation of information obtained during initial assessment into a working understanding of a client’s presenting concerns to aide development of a therapeutic plan. This session will introduce supervisees to the 5 Ps model of case formulation and the process of engaging a client to develop this collaboratively in session. Supervisees will have opportunity to practice their case formulation skills using case examples.

Initial intake assessment
BLOCK 1:
Being able to conduct a comprehensive intake assessment whilst establishing rapport with a new client is an essential skill for psychologists. This session will focus on how to obtain necessary information for case formulation and treatment planning during an initial session with a client, whilst also developing rapport and enhancing client engagement. Supervisees will have opportunity to practice components of an intake assessment via role play activities.

This session will provide an overview of the key features of specific learning disorders and will outline process for assessing for areas of specific learning difficulty. Supervisees will be introduced to intervention strategies and accommodations that may be recommended for this client population. Learning activities will be provided to allow supervisees to apply knowledge learnt during this session.
Assessment and Intervention Strategies for Autism and ADHD

This session will provide an overview of diagnostic criteria and associated features for autism and ADHD. Supervisees will be introduced to key assessment methods for identifying brain style differences associated with these forms of neurodivergence. General principles for working therapeutically with autistic and ADHD clients will be briefly discussed with further depth offered in a subsequent session on neurodiversity affirming practice. Learning activities will be provided to allow supervisees to apply knowledge learnt during this session.
Anxiety - Assessment & treatment

Participants will learn about the nature and presentation of different anxiety disorders. This session will include thorough information about diagnostic criteria for different anxiety disorders, assessment tools and methods across the lifespan, and evidence based treatment approaches. Participants will have the opportunity to practice skills in assessment and therapeutic techniques for working with anxiety.

Participants will gain an understanding of the benefits and pitfalls of diagnostic systems and learn how to utilise clinical and diagnostic interviews to inform assessment. Practical skills and techniques will be learned in this session as well as resources for navigating classification systems, and how to balance objective and subjective information in assessments.

Counselling skills and building rapport

Participants will learn about the science of the art of psychotherapy, the importance of building a therapeutic alliance, and practical skills of building rapport and counselling. This session will focus on learning about different therapeutic frameworks, learning about the outcomes associated with building a strong therapeutic alliance, ethical considerations and how to have boundaries within this relationship. Participants will learn practical skills in rapport building and counselling skills, understanding body language and non-verbal communication, and improve their confidence and instincts in becoming an effective therapist.
